As above, if you want to remove the Bixby Home menu pane entirely, you should press down on a blank section of the home screen until the OS's various menu panes come into view. Smart TVs are sets that connect to the internet, making it easy to stream videos from services such as Hulu and Netflix. All smart TVs can collect and share significant amounts of personal data about their viewers.

And so can the dozens—or even hundreds—of third-party apps that work with the platforms. Other researchers have found much the same thing. Nearly all the TVs sent data to Netflix even if the app wasn't installed or the owner hadn't activated it. More than 2, channels were offered, and the researchers found trackers on 69 percent of Roku channels and 89 percent of Amazon Fire TV channels.

The numbers are likely to be the same for smart TVs that have Roku or Amazon platforms built in. Below, we'll tell you how to limit the amount of data that's being collected.

But first you have to understand what kind of data you're giving up when you have a modern TV. The data is transmitted to the TV maker, one of its business partners, or both. And manufacturers' privacy policies indicate that they can share the information with lots of other companies. ACR can help a TV recommend shows you might want to watch.

But the data can also be used for targeting ads to you and your family, and for other marketing purposes. We first reported on ACR in A result of that case is that TV companies know they need your permission before collecting viewing data. You have the opportunity to decline as you set up a new TV. The settings are often hard to find. Even if you turn off ACR, your smart TV will continue to collect information for its manufacturer, possibly including your location, what apps you open, and more.

The only way to prevent that is to avoid connecting to the internet, which means ceasing to use it as a smart TV. Unlike other companies with smart TV platforms, Amazon says that it doesn't use ACR technology to track all the shows you watch, and that it doesn't collect data through a cable set-top box or any other non-Amazon device connected to TVs.

However, the system does collect information on programs you watch using an antenna and through streaming apps, such as Netflix, that are available through the Fire TV platform.

Smart TV tracking features: how to turn them off if you want some privacy

Of course, if you watch anything from Amazon Prime video, the company also knows those details. To turn off programming data collection, go to Settings, then Preferences, and scroll to the Right to Privacy Settings. In the same menu, you can also turn off Interest-Based Ads, which will affect not just your TV but also other Amazon devices.

You'll still see ads—on the Fire TV Edition television, other Amazon devices and websites, and related third-party apps—but they won't be personalized. We used a Toshiba to compile these directions, but the settings should be identical on all Amazon Fire TVs.

This process will probably be very similar with a variety of television sets, but of course, since every manufacturer does everything a little bit differently, the exact wording and path may vary. To turn on closed captions on a Samsung smart TV, you need to access the menu via the remote control.

From there we use the Accessibility menu. On older Samsung TVs or those in different regions, the menus might be different. Another example of enabling closed captions looks like this:. If you no longer need closed captions, you can turn them off in the same way as you turned them on.

If you have a different menu setup like the second example above, just repeat that but select off instead of on. The result should be the same. Newer Samsung Smart TVs also have the ability to use Accessibility Shortcuts for commonly used features that can improve the television experience for those with various abilities. This is a very common issue with all TV setups. Especially if you have had guests, house sitters, babysitters or something else.

Closed captions can be enabled at the source too. Make sure to check the settings on your source device and turn of closed captioning there too. Even if you turned it off on your TV, if it has been enabled on your source device, it will be sent to the TV anyway.

Cable and satellite boxes and other devices will vary but accessing the Menu, and then Settings is usually a good place to start. On the surface, closed captioning looks almost identical to subtitles.

For those with hearing difficulties, the difference can be huge. A subtitle is a transcription of all dialogue within the scene being shown. Look at closed captions and you will still see text dialog but you will also see more. You should see descriptions of any background noises, as well as key sound effects and any audio within the scene.

Closed captions will also distinguish between which characters are saying which lines, and if a character speaks off-screen, this will be noted in the captions. The idea is to add a lot more information to the viewer in order to engage more with any important content that might be missed when sound is not present.

Subtitles are designed for those who have trouble understanding the language or need a visual translation of the words being spoken. Closed captioning is specifically designed for the hearing impaired in order to communicate as much of a scene as practical so the viewer can gain maximum enjoyment out of it. Depending on your personal need, subtitles might be enough for you to fully enjoy a show, while others need closed captions to get the most out of the experience.
